Allagash River
Allagash Wilderness Waterway
The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is a 92-mile protected corridor of rivers, lakes, and streams winding through the remote forests of northern Maine. Renowned for its solitude and unspoiled beauty, the Allagash offers a classic backcountry canoeing experience, with quiet waterways framed by spruce and fir, campsites accessible only by paddle, and frequent sightings of moose, loons, and bald eagles. Established in 1966 as Maine’s first state-designated wild and scenic river, the waterway traces ancient travel routes once used by the Wabanaki people. From the still waters of Churchill Lake to the tumbling rapids of Allagash Falls, the journey blends challenge, peace, and a deep connection to the wild, undeveloped heart of the North Woods.
